Rules of the Competition
Section 1. Participants
1.1 Each school will send three (3) representatives per team to participate in the quiz bee.
1.2 Schools may opt to send at most two teams.
1.3 Participants must be currently enrolled high school students.
Section 2. Coverage
Questions will be taken from different fields of biology namely: (1) Zoology; (2) Botany, (3) Cell and Molecular Biology; (4) Ecology; and (5) Biology Trivia.
Section 3. Competition Rounds
3.1 The quiz bee will be composed of three rounds: Preliminaries, Semi-finals, and Championship rounds.
3.2 Preliminaries
3.2.1 The eliminations will be held on November 24, 2012, 11:30 – 12:00 pm at Escaler Hall.
3.2.2 The three representatives of each school will work as a team to answer a written examination.
3.2.3 The type of test includes multiple choice and problem solving questions.
3.2.4 Time allotted for this round will be thirty (30) minutes.
3.2.5 Any form of cheating is prohibited. Anyone caught doing the act will be disqualified.
3.2.6 The top ten teams with the highest scores will move on to the next round.
3.3 Semi-finals
3.3.1 The semi-finals will be held later in the afternoon. It will begin at 3:30 pm at the Escaler Hall.
3.3.2 This round is the typical quiz bee type wherein questions will be flashed on the screen.
3.3.3 This round will be composed of twenty (20) easy, ten (10) average, and five (5) difficult questions.
3.3.3.1 Each question will be read twice by the quizmaster. After the second reading, the countdown timer begins.
3.3.3.2 The team will then work together to answer the questions within the time allotted. Teams can start writing or solving for their answers even before the
countdown begins.
3.3.3.3 The teams can use the scratch papers for their solutions but will write the final answers on a separate clean paper which will be submitted to the
proctor.
3.3.3.4 Any form of cheating is prohibited. Anyone caught doing the act will be disqualified.
3.3.3.5 Corresponding points will be awarded based on the team’s answer. See 3.3.7 for the matrix.
3.3.3.6 In case of appeals, participants or coaches can ask for an appeal to the panel of judges after the answer has been given and before the next question
has been asked. Appeals made outside this time frame (i.e. when the next question has been asked) will not be entertained. The judges’ decision is
final.
3.3.4 After each difficulty, a recap of scores will be given. After the difficult round, the top four (4) teams with the highest scores will be eligible to participate in the Championship
round.
3.3.5 In case of ties, a clincher round will be held. Questions will be asked until only one team manages to answer it correctly. That team will move on to the next round.

3.4 Championships
3.4.1 The championship round will begin right after the semi-finals.
3.4.2 This round will be of Jeopardy type. The matrix will be composed of the different fields of biology covered with corresponding number of points. The higher the
number of points, the more difficult the questions will be.
3.4.2.1 The scores of the top four teams will be set back to zero.
3.4.2.2 The team who garnered the highest number of points from the Semi-finals round will be given the privilege to choose the first category.
3.4.2.3 The quiz master will read the question for that category twice. After the second reading, the timer starts.
3.4.2.4 All teams are given five (5) seconds to press the buzzer. The team who presses it will be given another five (5) seconds to state their answer. If the
team answers it right, points will be awarded and they will choose the next category. Otherwise, no points will be awarded and the other teams will be
allowed to steal.
3.4.2.5 In case of steals, the remaining teams will be given five seconds (5) to steal. The first team who rings the buzzer will be given five seconds (5) to give
an answer. If they answer it right, they will be given corresponding points. If the team who steals gets it wrong, the quiz master will announce the
answer and no one gets the points.
3.4.2.6 If the team who steals gets it wrong, the quizmaster will choose the next category. Upon saying timer starts now, the first team who buzzes will get the
chance to answer it. If they are right, they will get points and will choose the next category. Otherwise, other teams will be allowed to steal.
3.4.3 If there are any appeals, rules as described in the semi-finals will be implemented.
3.4.4 Any form of cheating is prohibited. Anyone caught doing the act will be disqualified.
3.4.5 After answering all the questions and there are ties, a clincher round will be conducted. Questions will be asked until only one team manages to answer it correctly.
3.4.6 The top three performers for the Championship round will be awarded respectively. They will also be awarded points that will be added to the overall points of their
schools (25%). All participants will receive certificates of participation.
Third Prize: medals and cash prize of PHP500
Second Prize: medals and cash prize of PHP1000
First Prize: medals and cash prize of PHP1500
